庭野日敬氏は、生前にご自身のお考えを多くの書物に残しています。
Mr Nikkyo Niwano leaves his thoughts in many books before he was alive.
その事は、後々の世代の人たちには、

動かすことの出来ない事実として

受け継がれて行くものだと受け止めています。

Religious mission

いつも、私が申しますように、
As I always say,
宗教者の使命は、人と人との間の隔壁を取り除く、
The mission of religious people is to remove the barriers between people,
いや取り除くだけではなく、そこに橋をかけるということです。
Not only to remove it, but to bridge it.
もっと大きく言いますと、
To put it more broadly,
国と国との間に存在する壁を取り除くことが、
Removing the barriers that exist between countries
今や宗教者の一大使命となっています。
It is now a major mission of religious people.
この表現は、
This expression is
いかにもオバーなものに聞こえるかもしれません。
It may sound overwhelming.
政治・外交、特に国連をもってしてもなかなかできない、
Politics and diplomacy, especially with the United Nations,
国と国との間の隔壁を取り除き、あまつさえ、
The partition between countries was removed, and even pine
理解と協力の橋をかけるなどということは、
To build a bridge between understanding and cooperation,
宗教者として、まことに僭越な言い方かもしれません。
As a religion, it may be a very prejudicial way of saying
しかし、宗教者であればこそ、それが可能だ、と私は思うのです。

スペインの宣教師フランシスコ・ザビエルの

名まえを、よくご存じのことと思います。

ザビェルは四百年以上も前に、
Mr Xavier was more than 400 years old,
キリスト教を伝えるために初めて日本へ渡来しています。
I came to Japan for the first time to convey Christianity.
もともと富裕な名門の家に生まれたザビエルは、
Originally born in a wealthy prestigious house, Mr Xavier
宣教師になろうという気持ちは毛頭持っていなかったそうですが、
It seems that he didn't have the desire to become a missionary,
青年時代に、パリ大学でイエズス会の創設者
Founder of the Society of Jesus at the University of Paris during his youth
イグナティウス・ロヨラ(スぺインの宗教家)に教化され、

強い宗教的覚醒を促されたのが、

宗教に身を投じる始まりだったと言うことです。

そのザビエルが心中に誓ったことは、

スぺイン、ポルトガルが海外築きつつある政治的帝国を、
Spain, the political empire Portugal is building abroad,
精神的国王に転じさせなければならない、
I have to turn into a spiritual king,
ということだったと言います。

このような大きな目的を懐いて、

ザビエルは三十歳のときにリスボンを出発し、

インドで布教をした後、鹿児島に上陸したときは、

すでに四十三歳になっていたと言うことです。

上陸以来半日にして

カタコトの日本語を話すようになったと言うのですから、

ザビエルは数多くの人をキリスト教徒にしておりますが、

わずかの問に、ザ.ヒエルの髪は白くなってしまったと

言うのですから大した苦労だったと察しられます。

その結果、とにもかくにも、当時の混乱していた

偏狭な変を説いていてはならないのです。

世界中の宗教者が、

互いに力を合わせて全人類的な愛を説く、
Working together to preach the love of all humanity,
これこそが宗教者の説くべき愛であり、
This is the love that religious people should preach,
慈悲でなければならないと思います。

このような観点に立って、

世界の宗教界をながめたとき、
When looking at the world religious world,
その姿は、決して、

私の満足できるものではありません。

個々それぞれに愛と慈悲を熱心に語りはしていましても、
Even though we were enthusiastically speaking about love and compassion to each individual,
各宗教の間に偏見と排他の壁があったことは事実です。
It is true that there were prejudice and exclusion barriers between each religion.
平和は、たんなるかけ声やスローガンであってはなりません。
Peace should not be the only call or slogan.
まず、宗教と宗教の間の壁を打ち破らなければならない。
First, the wall between religions must be broken.
そして語り合いの中で理解し合わねばならない。
And we have to understand each other in the conversation.
理解し合えば、必ず友情と協力の橋ができるに違いない。
If we understand each other, we can surely build a bridge of friendship and cooperation.
だからこそ偏見と排他と誤解の壁を取り除くために、
That is why in order to remove the barriers of prejudice, exclusion and misunderstanding,
宗教者は、同じ一つのテーブルにつかなくてはならない。
Religious people must be on the same table.
言葉にしてみれば簡単なことですが、

つまり、これが京都会議(第一回世界宗教者平和会議)に対する、

私の根本の発想であったのです。
